A quick drawing that I did when visiting a friend - we went to see the Hockney which was fabulous. And Warhorse which was visually fabulous - the story was a bit thin.... and London exhausting! Got back to Dorset and had to go straight out onto the hills and get my breath and perspective back!

The Thames is very paintable though .... !

the two drawings/paintings above were done on artstudio app. the one below on the Brushes app - the one that David Hockney uses. We are going to see the show on saturday - very much looking forward to it. I have to say that I prefer the art studio app - you can sort of mix the colours on the page ... ah well, its all fun!

My computer has not been behaving so it seems like a long time since I last made a post .... But here are some more drawings, of a fieldfare that the cat brought in. We don't think she killed it - it was totally un marked except for the cut on its breast....

SUNDAY EVE - EMPATHY DRAWING

Phew, what a day .... been learning quite a lot about twitter, and realising how difficult my hand is making life.... ah well

- also just done an 'empathy drawing' I remember how Trevor Felcey ( RCA) - a fabulous painter friend who is worth looking up - talked about. When (at the age of 35 ish I went back to college at the Byam Shaw, to own up to being a painter after all, or not... after having three babies , being a Common woman from Greenham and employed as Dorset Peace Worker by the Quakers...being arrested etc ) where was I? Oh yes, on the top of a Clapham omnibus I remember Trevor talking about empathy drawings and I told him about leaving my first husband, and running away with the painting tutor.... oy vey.... a long time ago.

so ... Empathy drawings... well one reason I paint I guess is because some things don't fit into words..... talking to Elizabeth Speller.... are you listening?

FIRST PICTURES WITH THE BRUSHES app

One of the things I am learning is that if I want my hands to do another 30+ years, then I have to take resting it/them seriously. And doing 'proper' painting always involves my poor left hand ... so the iPad has been a great stand in...

These pictures are fairly self explanatory - above is one cat! below the view of Frenchmill Lane that I lived with for ...30 years. I did it whilst visiting a very dear friend.....

..and the last two - the snow that we had in North Dorset today - Coco looking our of the window at the snowy landscape, and an oak tree we can see from the house. I hope the snow settles and lasts for a bit... I love the way the landscape looks ... transformed magically, and the painting opportunities it offers.

I have been using the Brushes app, with these drawings, because I thought the colour was better/easier ... but actually I am not so sure looking at what I have done with both apps ( art studio being the other) and I like the wet paint brush in a.s. .... and the easy 'fill' and there is something a tad cumbersome about the way the brush tool changes .... still its good to practise and be comfortable with both. Not like pencil on real paper though, or paint!

But I bet Matisse would have used it, and Picasso and maybe Cezanne and Monet too? Whadya think?

PHYSIO at SALISBURY HOSPITAL

I spent over two hours in the physio/plastic surgery dept of what we used to call Odstock today.... and had the attention of two very highly trained and committed therapists, who have given me exercises to do and made me a special splint ... so I can go on painting, playing the piano and making marmalade for the next 30 years, .... I just feel so grateful for this service and ...whilst Megan was making the new splint I did this quick drawing. I think that the colours on Brushes are much better and have been experimenting... a waiting room drawing follows...

CHILDREN'S MEETING - sunday ......

I have developed the habit of taking my iPad with me when I go out, and last Sunday I was pleased I did. It was children's meeting at my local Meeting House and the children were drawing, and playing quietly, mostly! A friend read a children's version of Chief Seattle's address which speaks of the connectedness of all things upon the earth, and I did this drawing.

I know there is some controversy over the total authenticity of the speech, but I think it speaks of some simple and deep truth

I have said before that I am not really geeky and au fait with computers and stuff, and/but I have discovered something so generous and useful I wanted to share it!

I have just had to upgrade my MacBook to LION in order to edit images on my iPad ( at least that is what I was told) .... this meant that photoshop I had no longer worked ... which in turn has led me to research getting a replacement.

In struggling to understand the difference between the above I found this really useful and perfect answer .... and thought I would share it with whoever is interested! The web is wonderful isn't it? I spend too much time on it I know! new pics on next post!

Photoshop, Illustrator, And InDesign: What’s The Diff?

The Adobe Creative Suite is an amazing (albeit expensive) tool. In reality though, it is comprised of over a dozen different pieces of software that all have unique functionality, purposes, strengths, and even faults. For my web and graphic design needs, I think that three specific pieces of software are particularly relevant. I use Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign on a daily basis, but for different reasons. Need to know the difference between these three pieces of Adobe software? Want to know what to use each one for? Read on!

Adobe Photoshop
Photoshop is a great tool, but people often use it for the wrong reasons. Photoshop is a raster based software, meaning it works on a pixel based level. Images built using rastor based software can easily become pixelated, but that can be avoided. Photoshop is ideal for editing pictures/photos but not ideal for images with text, or for designing layouts for web or print.

Adobe Illustrator
Illustrator is hands-down my favorite of all the Adobe products out there. You can produce pretty much any type of image or file from it, so I use it to produce all of my web graphics, web designs, and even documents. Illustrator is different from Photoshop in that it is a vector based software, meaning instead of working on a pixel level, it works using lines. You can zoom in and out as much as you want from whatever you make in Illustrator, and it will never lose it’s detail. Now when you output that into a rastor based image such as a jpg, you may end up with some pixelation, but when resizing within Illustrator, you’ll never lose that detail. If you continuously resize your image in Photoshop, you will certainly distort it. So all of this makes Illustrator great for producing web graphics, documents, and full page designs, but not so great for working with photographs.

Adobe InDesign
InDesign is most commonly used for complex book layouts. My company, College Prowler uses it to layout all of our books on colleges. What I personally tend to use it for is actually to produce pdf presentations. As a designer, I much prefer pdfs over any other document type such as a Word document or Powerpoint presentation as I think they appear more professional. InDesign is a vector based program just like Illustrator, and has much of the same capabilities, but focuses it’s strengths on multiple pages and master pages. This allows you to make a master view for your presentation or book (i.e. logo in the bottom right corner, page numbers, et cetera) while also allowing you to customize each page. I wouldn’t advise InDesign over Illustrator for anything but books and presentations simply because you do lose some functionality from Illustrator.

THREE CHEERS FOR OUR NATIONAL HEALTH....

I have just come back from Salisbury Hospital and CAN TYPE with both hands, having had my plaster removed! I know it is fashionable to criticise so many of the ...institutions we have in England/Britain, especially the NHS, (and schools and young people.... ) but in my experience it is mostly very good. AND IT IS FREE for heaven's sake..... I just wish the politicians would stop snarping and point scoring and ... the tories would leave it alone!

I really think we are SO lucky

This picture is another label for some rather delicious chutney/ sauce I have made... and has nothing to do with the rest of the text, I just a picture might be nice, and I finished it off whilst waiting this morning, on the ipad, of course!

A LOVE AFFAIR ......

THERE HAVE some wonderful winter sunsets recently .... and last week I had to stop washing up and take a photo ..... I have been painting this hill - my hill(!!) since we moved to Dorset in 1976! that is 35 years isn' t it ? Some of the first paintings were from Robin and Trisha Porteous' field at Mayo Farm ... and later from Frenchmill Lane when we lived there. It is a continuing relationship and to be quite honest - I still do not feel these paintings have not got 'there' yet.... still do not say quite what I feel so deeply! I cant say what that is until I have done it! I believe I will!

A painter friend of mine from years ago said you have to love what you paint - and I certainly love the hill, it has been the companion of so many of the important events of my life! Great happiness and sadness, and ordinary life too. Good friends, siblings, lovers and offspring, all shared walks, picnics, tobbaning, passed on - our children now play with their children on the slopes..... romantic ordinary and true.

The image from my ipad wouldn't load because it was a PSD... but now its a PNG... I must do some labels for myself.... I have made some splendid sweet chilli plum chutney ... with plums from the garden of course!

and my own mincemeat, raspberry and redcurrent jam (delicious) and as soon as my hand is out of plaster .... seville marmalade... I put arrak in last time and it was fab!

I seem to be in a most creative time of my life, and its so good! Later in life can yield a new kind of fruitfulness! More about this later...

One of the amazing things about the ipad is you can save the drawing and then try colour ... and still have the original....

Well - its a very good way of drawing when one is incapacitated! My left hand is in plaster and will be so for another 3 weeks!

Typing is hard work - so will keep it to a minimum!

SALISBURY DISTRICT HOSPITAL.....

During an 8 hour wait for the op on my hand, I had time to do this drawing ....
This is the third bit of surgery I have had for arthritis ... Robert says I will be a totally new woman soon! ..... typing with one hand!

I also had Martin Gayford's conversations with Hockney to read, and a spy thriller (by Henry Porter - rather good but my sleep and water deprived brain found that too difficult!)....

If I was not already married to a Yorkshireman, I could fall in love with Hockney! I did not know he was a pacifist as well.... BUT I am sure lots of us who have not lived in LA for 30 years, already know about intimate relationship with the Dorset/English landscape!

iPAD DRAWINGS ... whilst in bed....

I have had the ipad for a while now, but with all the preparation for Christmas it is only now I have had the time to play with it. I have downloaded an 'adequate' (art studio, £2.99) drawing app and had the space to try it out! It is limited .... but good to learn on - and much more immediate than the waccom! Any views on good drawing apps would be appreciated!

Quite properly the cats are my first subject......! I have retired to bed following a trapeziectomy to my left hand .... The cats, the ipad and radio 4 listen again, are perfect convalescing companions!

Oh! this one is the kitchen table..... its a fabulous piece of kit.... many, more drawings to come.....

NOVEMBER PAINTINGS

Here are the three paintings that I am working on at present - but have not been able to spend as much time in the studio as I would like. Getting work framed for Christmas shows and other more domestic chores also - preparation for Dorset Art Weeks and Christmas, of course. I hope next week will see these three completed and more ideas I have underway....

Two Trees 120 x 120 cm oil/canvas. I see these trees - with Duncliffe behind them most days when the animals ( the two cats and the dog) and I go for our walk. Actually - all three paintings are on familiar walks ...

Melbury and Compton Down 80 x 120 cm oil/canvas - I have painted this landscape so many times over the past ....nearly 40 years and this Hill in particular keeps me coming back over and over again ... ! This is the walk when we cross the lane and walk north towards Shaftesbury. Its about 5 minutes away. I can see Melbury from my kitchen window .... makes washing up a joy! (almost) well - everytime I look out of the window the hill - MY hill changes, looks different, always entrancing!

Fontmell Down and the Curlews 90 x 90 oil / canvas ... I have not painted this particular view before - and I rarely choose a view with buildings in ... but I am rather pleased with this take on a familiar subject.... mostly the walks here

require a lift 'to the top ' above Littledown and we walk home - what a delight! I have seen the ravens we have at home and red or black kites too. No curlews sadly!

I have spoken before about how strange painting is ... I know I have said it in my book - and it is true. For several weeks I have had ideas and - eventually got myself out of the kitchen out of the garden and into the studio - where probably I have 'tidied up' This displacement activity is so familiar .... I know it well - how was it possible that today - at about 3 o'clock I finally stopped myself 'walking round it' ( as Robert says) and stopped negotiating with myself and just started .... and two pictures are more or less done ... and loads more to do... now I have breached the ... blockage or dam or whatever it was, it will flow till it dries up or circumstances intervene or ... something else stops it and another lull will take place - like fields that have to lie fallow, it is not reasonable to expect creativity to be on tap all the time!

I got this drawing tablet a while ago and have only just begun to use it ... last night after making chutney from all the produce we have here ... LABELS! .... its quite hard getting used to looking at the screen while drawing on the tablet, and there are loads of things I need to learn ... but I am pleased and excited with the experiment! Who knows what else will happen.... ???

Two weeks ago I was attacked - road rage......... the attack stopped just short of being actually physical .... but psychically it has really affected me - the suspects are being questioned soon - and I hope they will opt for restorative justice rather than court ....... It has taken me this long to stop feeling weepy and pathetic and find my justifiable anger ....... and here is what has helped me access how I feel about being threatened and abused and to say in the words of LOUISE MENSCH in today's paper, "Get Stuffed, losers, I dont bully that easily" ....

No more about it for now... except to say that Victim Support may use one of the following as a poster.... I dont know if they ( the paintings!) are any good - there are certainly things about them that I like - and maybe that can lead me on somewhere new. ONce again I am grateful that somehow I have a channel, a way of exploring the interior that feels like a gift.

I painted this when I was at St Martin's I think - when I was 20! I remember the grapefruits went off - I think I had made the mistake of having them in the freezer compartment of the fridge... ! Shared house in Keildon Road, SW11 ... ah innocent days. I wish I could contact some of my housemates ... even with the good offices of Facebook and ... the dreaded Friend's united no luck! Ah well - I am pleased to see in those days - I was so young but I could wield a brush... two more still lives to follow... just for fun

I first read/heard of this piece when I was Peace Worker at a Conference at Woodbrooke College in Birmingham in the days of Greenham and all that... and it has a place in my 'fuzzy file' something I copied from Bruce Kent...... in another life that laid the foundations for this one......

This painting is finished and I am really happy with it ... excited about where it has taken me!

Often when you hear writers talking on the radio about their novels, they say the characters take over the story and the plot, they develop a life of their own. This seems to reflect what happens to me when things go well - when 'I' get out of the way... and then I am working in harmony with the painting, a channel for the inevitable... the painting takes over and I am led.

It is getting more abstract, less descriptive, less literal. And as I looked at the flower bed I just kept seeing more colours - suggesting themselves to me! I am ready to begin the next painting as long as I dont allow myself to be distracted by watering geraniums and tomatoes and dead heading cosmos, oh ! or picking raspberries!

So it is also about the bounty this time of year, The Good Life times two!

I dont know what to call this painting - I want to call it for a very dear friend - I have to ask her permission first so I will come back and label it later!

WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY .....

I have been out painting ... wasnt it hot today? Wonderful, what a treat and lets hope we have an indian summer? Finally I have got the lovely Mr P to take a 'natural photo' of me ... I was actually painting, not pretending to !.... the flower bed of course.

It began from another angle - and/but I am being led by the nose - I try NOT to think when I paint, thinking DOES NOT HELP at all when painting ... it is about the left brain trying to be bossy and organise things and be sensible and .... BORING .... no magic with left brain .. or brian .... enough for now .....

I am pleased with this - the end of a second session - and a relaxed one at that!
Putting it on the blog is more stressful - if I remember I must talk about 'earnestness' and 'play as opposed to angst .... making a good, honest and authentic painting....

I want my work to reflect joy and all those happy emotions - why not? the flowers of the fields etc etc .... but never froth at the expense of honesty and integrity... and I think that what I want to express is a clear ... avenue to God's grace - acceptance and knowledge of what is so good and so available in my blessed life.... without my vanity of ideas and stuff .... striving at a felt authenticity and simplicity ... of the grace of being a ...late middle aged woman in this treasured corner of beautiful England. What blessings indeed!

MEETING OLD FRIENDS..... in Wales

I sold these three paintings over ten years ago - and during a recent visit to Wales my husband was able to take photographs of them ... I am especially fond of the first one of our old garden in Shaftesbury. You can even see the tower of St Peter's church .... my love of painting gardens goes back a long way!

It was three oclock when I finally got out to paint yesterday! What is it with

all the 'things that have to be done' ??? Just the tasks that we all have to get done to keep life afloat.... and then some others too - I think it does take a conscious decision to do the things that are really important and focus on that....

In consequence maybe I just grabbed at this view in desperation - it is so lovely being out - not sure what this picture will be like. I think the house is too dominant - too big probably. I left the car up in the field so will see what I can do today. Here is a photo of two of my companions !

It is really great to be painting again - it feels such a treat, like a kid out of school! After the show at Ashley Wood last month I have spent my time catching up with all the things that have been neglected while I was taken up with preparation for the exhibition (76 paintings, and the 80 page book!)

The event was a great success but/and it is such a joy to be painting again! This painting below is nearly finished - and since it looks like it is going to be fine I shall stop this and go and get on with it and the other one I started last night!

Ashley Wood Farm near Tisbury ( SP3 6PY) is a wonderful collection of barns on the Fonthill Estate and they provide a marvellous venue for showing paintings. Here are some photographs from the 'Barn'. The other connecting space is the milking parlour, I have hung 76 paintings in all, and some woodcuts. 34 of the pictures have been painted since Dorset Arts Week a year ago - I have to admit I am a bit surprised myself at the output - my framer (wwwpictuerframers.co.uk) said I should take up a hobby!

On Saturday I have an impromptu talk during the Music Festival that was going on. I will speak more of this later.

I will be at Ashley Wood every afternoon between 2.30 and 3.30 to meet people ... Do Come!

This is the top of an old air raid shelter I think ... its a place where the girls like to stop and have a wash! The field has been ploughed and there is corn just begining to appear. In the background is Nip Mountain ( Melbury of course)

I have been working very hard getting ready for my exhibition - for months and now all the preparations are more or less done - I have my beautiful book ready and we start to hang pictures tomorrow .... so here is a little diversion ....!

This is a picture of my dog Solomon - the attentions of this lamb are really worrying him! He is a beauty, but a bit of a lady-boy - so my sons say - they say I have ruined, and its probably true!

I am so excited about the book - it is fab.... my work looks great and I am so greatful to Johnny ... it is a real pleasure to work with someone and I have learnt a lot - about good design that I didnt know. Simon Barber of Evolver said that there are two things an artist should not be allowed to do - take their own photos ( where he admitted I was the exception!) and design their own publicity... and to tell the truth - looking at the stuff I have happily done on my little mac before - I can see where it does not pass muster! Oh well - more later!

I want to talk about 'mistakes' ......

PAINTING IS A STRANGE BUSINESS- TWO PAINTINGS FROM DONHEAD

I can explain what I mean by talking about a painting I did several years ago - my husband and I were painting over a few days in Donhead, it was the second day I think, and I felt so stuck and unable to 'get it' I was really struggling. This chap - a farm worker came up and looked and it seemed to me he didnt think much of it because he said " you should go and ask your teacher for help!" I think amateur art groups paint around there. This felt like the final straw - but Robert came up a little while later and said - " really like that, dont do too much more!" and now it is one of my favourite paintings and I wouldnt sell it! Strange ? I feel it a painting I still need to follow up - it could help me with my painting of Melbury Hill .... and more of that later on!

I did another later in the year which I am also very pleased with.

at least it seems to me that I never know if or why or how a picture will work, or not. This one - of the vineyards in France, is taken from a combination of drawings and watercolours I did on the spot, and photographs but eventually without reference to anything - just painting instinctively ...

I surprised myself by 'getting in the groove' and although it isnt quite finished and today I am less pleased with it than I was last night - I had a wonderful time! Listening to Paul Simon, Bryan Ferry, Van Morrison and Joanie Mitchell. Painting actually makes me sane I think! It is a place where I can meet myself. I am very fortunate.

Pond and Blossom - this is the apple tree pond of other paintings and the blossom is of my lovely fragrant crab apple tree. This spring is happening too quickly and it is too hot .... but I heard the cuckoo .... and the blackbird is

the painting is not quite finished yet .. I thought the water had maybe become too dark but it is a dark purpley browny blue ... fabulous colours to explore. Colours only work in relationship to one another .... not in isolation - one has to keep working over the whole canvas all the time....

heavenly ... listening to all the sounds - the bees make such full on sound - which seems precious and reassuring. This painting is from one of my favourite spots in our tranquil natural and unsophisticated spot ..... we love to watch the garden and especially the pond evolve ... .

I have been working in my studio today - and when I was doing the ritual dance of sorting out my outdoor palette, indoor palette and generally rearrange things, music on the bose ( Joan Baez, David Bowie Van Morrisson and Leonard Cohen are the ones I remember ) and thought 'How happy I am' ... I love being in my studio and .... I am so lucky. Here are some pictures that I took in the

winter - you can see the bubble wrap insulation on the windows...

Here is my palette ..... I use old kitchen worktops - white melamine is something I found out about from an artist boyfriend! it makes sense to use white if you are painting on a white surface after all ....

Here is my 'desk' with images of William Mills - a painter I very much admire, my paint store, CD's and bose, glasses ( several pairs) a painting I like of mine - Crab apples and Cosmos - of our garden 18 months ago ... a sculpture of mine awaiting repair ..... canvas pliers ( which I also use to squeeze out the last bit of paint ) etc etc....

Here is a painting of Melbury I did from Mayo Farm ....maybe 30 years ago... I wish I could paint like that now! I am still trying to find out how to express what I feel about the hill.....

Tomorrow I will put up photos of the painting I have nearly finished - if all goes well that is! I feel very fortunate to have a place to go that I look forward to ... even at those times when painting is difficult I feel happy here, it is a good place to be! Like this magic corner of Dorset - I count my blessings...

Sujata, a woman I was great friends with whilst we did an 'Art of Loving' ( Eric Fromm) course at Monkton Wyld - sadly we lost touch, but I will try and contact her now I found this drawing from ... 20 years ago.

I so love drawing and finding these - and there are many others ready to be scanned and posted - just reminds me. How much is captured in a drawing that a photograph just cannot do ..... it is the action of the hand across the paper, the eye and hand. I always think that is where humans are at our best. Eye hand and brain, together, whether it is drawing or making pastry, gardening or sewing.... it is what makes us healthy. Well that is what I think!

..... or painting with impish kittens ..... this is Muriel and she was determined to sit on my lap - or my palette. She was rather put out when I stood up to work!

I think I said before that I always work best standing up - something to do with the energy!

SPRING IN THE ORCHARD 60 x 60 cm oil/canvas

This is the first time this year I have got my things outside - except for France of course! It seems to take a while to remember how to organise myself - longer each spring! I remember going out painting in the winter - painting the River Mole near Leatherhead and my boy friend of the time anchoring my easel with rope to a brick to stop the wind blowing it away.... the canvas like a sail and turps spilling all over the palette! My days of outward bound painting are over!

But there is nothing like painting in the landscape and yesterday was a real gift -there were Chiffchaffs in the tree I was painting ..... and the swallows and woodpeckers ..... wonderful. And then a good friend called round and we went for an evening walk. What bliss!

A VISIT TO THE CHARENTE.....

We have just got back from a short visit with friends .... we spent some of the time out drawing and painting and this is the first little sketch - unfinished at present - of a vineyard we passed in Cognac country. We were able to stop and I did a few quick watercolour sketches which I used for this small painting.

This is a person who means very much to me, ..... we were introduced to each other many years ago, through the good offices of one of my cats, Kitty who would go missing in the summer when she found a favourite place in Mollie's greenhouse lying on her seedlings...... ah what a cat she was, and what a lot of talk of marmalade and poetry and the meaning of life Mollie and I have shared, because of her .... welcoming the apparently random blessings of life.....

SEAMUS HEANEY .... THE BALER

All day the clunk of a baler

Ongoing, cardiac-dull,

So taken for granted

It was evening before I came to

To what I was hearing

By the giddied-up race of a tractor

At the end of the day

Adam works as a thatcher, but for several years has been a charcoal burner in the Dorset woods.

Although I began drawing him in red chalk that didnt work and I suddenly thought of the obvious - charcoal.....! I hope he comes back for another session or two, I may do a painting if we have time

My husband, Robert, always says, when he sees a new painting, which I think of as half finished .... or at least arrived at a point where I am maybe beginning to know where I am or what to do ...he says " dont do anymore ... dont overdo it " he is often right ...

Painting is such a weird and magical thing ... I love the ambiguity and endless possibility of it. One mark, ten minutes painting can ruin it or make it... or the pause for a cup of tea change my perception of what is going on. That is why I love T.S Elliott..... one of my favorite bits from Little Gidding ... and of course the title of the painting... not snowy coppice but

If you came this way,
Taking the route you would be likely to take
From the place you would be likely to come from,
If you came this way in may time, you would find the hedges
White again, in May, with voluptuary sweetness.
It would be the same at the end of the journey,
If you came at night like a broken king,
If you came by day not knowing what you came for,

I didnt manage to do as much as I intended yesterday - will finish it today I hope. I am pleased with this painting - though it has developed in a way I had not intended - more primitive and playful .... but I like that. I have learnt to allow the unexpected to happen and not try and control the way things go... to paint instinctively.... but it isnt always easy! I will write more about this in future blogs.....

Naming paintings is difficult..... because I tend to paint things in series .... naming them 'Snow Painting I' - or ' Snow Painting IX' helps no one to identify them. sometimes I name them after the music I was listening and dancing to ...

Today I have added paintings about the snow. The first two have been painted during the current snowy weather. Everything looks so beautiful and the first morning, after I had fed the birds the dog and I went out to do our walk...

The excitement I felt at the sight of the familiar landscape transformed I remembered Colerdige's Frost at Midnight.... and am once again grateful that I was at school when this was what one learned.....

"The frost performs its secret ministry,

Unhelped by any wind. The owlet's cry

Came loud--and hark, again! Loud as before.

The inmates of my cottage, all at rest,

Have left me to that solitude, which suits

Abstruser musings: save that at my side

My cradled infant slumbers peacefully.

'Tis calm indeed! So calm, that it disturbs

And vexes meditation with its strange

And extreme silentness. Sea, hill, and wood,

This populous village! Sea, and hill, and wood,

Can you tell which is which? I dont know whether I shall paint more ponds.... I think it is more than likely .... finding subject matter that inspires and delights is really important and the two ponds we have made here in the past three years have so far been the subject of more than 20 paintings ... I have rather lost count, not all of them have worked, most have been painted in the summer with me standing in front of the pond in question and all my stuff in a wheel barrow ... (more pictures in later posts) ... the first and last are from a photograph - and that is different, not better or worse the middle one I invented ... more of this anon....! The apples are painted from life because that is how it happened.
